Launch of the Allseas
Solitaire
Chromatic designed the
lighting for the launch of the 350m long oil pipe laying
supertanker "Solitaire"at Swan Hunters Ship Yard,
Newcastle Upon tyne.
The event started in the morning
with a reception in a 50m x 15m tent mounted on a barge
moored end on to the bow of the ship.
One end of the tent was decorated
& lit in the theme of the "Mad Hatters Tea Party",
with a fountained garden, Long tea tables, and actors
playing the characters from Lewis Carols
story.
The 500 invited guests where
then shown into a viewing theatre at the end of the tent
which had the bow of the ship as its backdrop.
The launch ceremony was played out
by Japanese Kodo drummers and lighting effects, with a
crescendo of a 100 bottles of Champagne launched down 3
flown tracks which smashed into the ships bow.
When the audience returned to the
main tent the area had been changed into a dining area
with a stage at one end. The guests had dinner and were
then entertained by Mark Knoffler's (Dire Straits)
"Beverly Hillbillies".
The barge and tent was then moved
across the river so that the audience could view the
whole ship for the finale of fireworks, lightning
flashes, and searchlights which lit up the sky and the
whole of the ship.
